The President, Muhammadu Buhari, has decided to delay the 2023 Population and Housing Census. It was supposed to happen on May 3-7, 2023, but the new government will determine when the census will take place.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, wrote a message and shared it on Saturday morning.

The government decided to delay counting how many people live in Nigeria. They think it is important to count again because the last time was 17 years ago. This will help them make better plans to help the Nigerian people.

Mohammed said that Buhari thinks that they made good progress getting ready for the census, even though it got postponed. Buhari thinks the way they are planning to do the census is good and will make sure the information is correct.

The President said that they have made good progress on the plan to count how many people live in the country in 2023. They finished dividing the country into smaller sections to count, did some practice tests, and trained people to help. They also bought devices to help with the counting and set up computer systems.

He praised the way the Commission is organizing the Census to make sure it is correct and dependable. He specifically mentioned the huge use of technology that can help create a top-level Census and be useful for future ones.

The President said to keep getting ready for the 2023 Population and Housing Census, so that the new government can build on the progress we’ve already made.
