AFCON 2023 final: Peter Obi on how Herbert Wigwe’s passing will prevent me from seeing Super Eagles vs. Cote d’Ivoire

According to Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, he will not be there for the All African Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship match between the Super Eagles and Cote d’Ivoire.

Obi claimed that his grief over Access Bank Holdings’ Herbert Wigwe has prevented him from attending the AFCON championship game at the stadium.

Remember that Wigwe’s death from a helicopter crash in the US was verified on Saturday.

But because the dead was a friend of his, Obi claimed the tragedy had an impact on him.

Obi posted the following on X: “My dear Super Eagles,

As you take the field for today’s historic AFCON finals, I would want to join our throngs of other countrymen in expressing my unwavering support and dedication to you.

I regret to notify you that I will not be able to attend the stadium in person to support you.

“I am deeply saddened and affected by the devastating news of the passing of my dear friend, former Group Managing Director of Nigeria Exchange Group PLC Abimbola Ogunbanjo, and of Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Holdings, along with his wife and son. Herbert Wigwe is one of our nation’s outstanding entrepreneurs.

“After this tragedy, I’ve had to make the difficult decision to honor these great souls who made enormous contributions to the development of our country, particularly in education and youth empowerment through jobs by canceling my plans to be physically present at the match venue.”
