Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has warned Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP’s national chairman, who has been suspended by his political unit in Benue State, that the fight within the party against him has only just begun.

The governor declared that it is now unthinkable to give the party’s leadership to anyone who was unable to win their political unit, ward, local government, or state during the most recent general elections.

Governor Wike gave a speech on Monday at the opening of the renovated Community Secondary School, Okoro-nu-Odo, in the State’s Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.

The PDP suffered a catastrophic defeat in the 2023 presidential and governorship elections in Benue and across the nation after the governor of Rivers State accused Dr. Ayu of accepting bribes.

“Ask them, those who want to be chairman of this party (PDP), what do you have to give to the party now? Presidential election; you accepted bribe, and lost in your unit, lost in your ward, lost in your local government, and lost in your State. Which event will you now be in charge of?

When the G-5 governors and Integrity Group members demanded that Ayu resign after Alhaji Atiku Abubakar emerged as the PDP presidential candidate, Governor Wike claimed that it was God who hardened Ayu’s heart to resist.

He observed that if Ayu had left at that time, his allies, who were vehemently opposed to the zoning of elective and appointive offices, would have used that as an justification for the party’s appalling showing in the recently held general elections.

The catastrophic defeat of the PDP under Ayu’s leadership in his unit, ward, local government, state, and federal levels, the governor claimed, will make it morally offensive for him to continue serving as the party’s national chairman. He claims that Ayu’s suspension marks the start of the battle to keep the party together.
