The Nigerian Government announced that the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine will arrive in Nigeria by April 2024.
Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who is in charge of health in Nigeria, said that Nigeria requested a vaccine for malaria. They applied for it during a certain period of time, which ended on April 18, 2023. This was discussed during a meeting for World Malaria Day.
Nigeria didn’t ask for the vaccine before the deadline on January 17, 2023.
In 2021, the World Health Organization suggested that lots of kids in places like sub-Saharan Africa get a vaccine called RTS,S to help protect them from a type of malaria called Plasmodium falciparum.
Another opportunity for help from Gavi is now available until April 18th.
Dr. Osagie, or his representative, Permanent Secretary Mamman Mamuda, said that the National Programme is working with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and other important groups to get and use the malaria vaccine (RTS,S), as long as they can get enough of it.
The country has asked for RTS,S vaccine from Gavi and got it. This should be in the country by April 2024.
