The Senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Rose Oko, has died at the age of 63.

Politics Nigeria learned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member passed away on Monday night in a hospital in the United Kingdom where she had been receiving treatment in the last month.

Confirming the story, one of her aides said: “She passed on last night in the UK where she has been in the last one month.”

“The Amazon Goes Home, Sad! Distinguished Senator Dr Mrs Rose Okoji Oko, You Left Us At The Time Your Services To The Great People Of CRS Is Highly Needed. May Your Soul Rest In Peace. Amen,” another aide posted on his Facebook wall.

Also reacting to the death of the Senator, one of her close relatives said: “Heartbroken to hear of the passing of my dear Cousin Senator Dr Rose Okoji Oko after a long-fought battle with a physical affliction.

“You gave your best to your world now that it has pleased the Almighty God to call you home may your soul find eternal rest in Heaven. Adieu, Distinguished Senator Dr Rose Okoji Oko.”

The late Senator, who was born on September 27, 1956, was elected as the first female representative from her Senatorial District in June 2015 and re-elected in 2019.

Oko was the chairman, Senate Committee on Trade and Investment before her death and was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) during the 8th Senate.

The late lawmaker was a member of the House of Representatives when she represented the Yala/Ogoja Federal Constituency in the 7th National Assembly.

She was elected into office as the first female representative from her constituency in June 2011 and served as the Deputy Chairman House Committee on Education.

The news of the lawmaker’s death is coming after that the deaths of Imo senator, Benjamin Uwajumogu, and Ignatius Longjan, Plateau senator.
