For violating electoral laws during the general elections in 2023, men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have detained over 700 offenders.

Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police, announced this on Monday during a meeting with the commissioners of police from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in addition to other senior officers.

The IGP states that 781 people have actually been arrested as of this writing.

IGP Alkali Baba provided additional information about the arrest, stating that 203 arrests were made as a result of the 185 cases of electoral infractions that were reported during the presidential election.

The police chief reported that 578 offenders were arrested for electoral violations related to the Governorship and State Assembly elections, with 304 electoral violations being noted.

In light of threats to national security posed by some political actors who, according to the IGP, are attempting to sabotage the country’s peace after the elections, the meeting with the Commissioners and other force leaders has become crucial, he said.

He urged Nigerians to work toward unity rather than condemning political actors who use ethnic profiling to advance their own interests.
