On Sunday, March 14, 2021, the titans of music and the entertainment industry will arrive at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, CA, for “Music’s Biggest Night” of the year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, which was rescheduled from January due to Covid-19 concerns.

A surge in coronavirus cases in Los Angeles in January led the Recording Academy and CBS to reschedule the awards ceremony “after thoughtful conversations with health experts.”

The Grammy nominations were chocked full of surprises this year, including Beyonce leading the nomination count despite not releasing a new album. Major snubs for top-selling artists The Weeknd and Luke Combs also raised eyebrows.

Nominations were influenced by racial unrest, particularly the death of George Floyd, over the past year.

“I think it’s meaningful. I think it’s reflective of what’s gone on in our world,” Harvey Mason Jr., the Recording’s interim president and CEO, told the Associated Press. “Musicians and artists and writers and producers, they write about what’s going on in their lives.

Beyoncé is the leading contender with nine nominations at this year’s show. She picked up song and record of the year bids with “Black Parade,” which she released on Juneteenth, the holiday that commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free.

A winner of 24 Grammys, Beyoncé becomes the second-most nominated act in the history of the awards show with 79 nominations. She is tied with Paul McCartney, who earned a nomination this year for best boxed or special limited edition package.

Six nominations each went to Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, and Roddy Ricch, who followed Beyoncé as the second-most nominated acts.

Another album of the year nominees include Syracuse native Post Malone’s multi-hit “Hollywood’s Bleeding”; Coldplay’s “Everyday Life,” which featured world music sounds and politically-charged lyrics; HAIM’s sophomore release “Women In Music Pt. III”; Jhené Aiko’s atmospheric R&B project “Chilombo”; English musician Jacob Collier’s multi-genre release “Djesse Vol. 3”; and the deluxe edition of Black Pumas’ self-titled debut album.

Grammy nominees are submitted to the Recording Academy by members and record companies and screened by more than 350 experts for eligibility in the awards show’s 84 categories. Members then vote on a first-round ballot to determine nominees, then vote on a final ballot to determine the winners.
