A court in the UK gave a punishment of nine years and eight months in jail to Nigeria’s ex-deputy head of the Senate on Friday. He was found guilty of planning to take someone’s kidney for his own daughter who was ill.

A man named Ike Ekweremadu was given a prison sentence by judge Jeremy Johnson. He took part in a terrible activity that targeted poor and desperate people. This was the first case like it in the UK.

The judge at the London court called people-trafficking for organ harvesting a type of slavery. He gave a prison sentence for this crime.

“He said that it is wrong to buy and sell human beings and their body parts. This makes Ekweremadu look bad because it is a very bad thing to do.”

The Nigerian politician who has a lot of money was found guilty in March for planning to take a young person who sells things on the street to Britain to sell their body parts.

Ekweremadu’s wife and a middleman named Obinna Obeta were also found guilty in the scheme.

Beatrice Ekweremadu was put in prison for four years and six months, and Obeta for 10 years.

Sonia Ekweremadu, who is 25 years old, cried when she was found not guilty of the same accusation in March after a long time of discussion by the jury.

Last Friday, she said goodbye and moved her hand to her mom and dad before they left the court. Both of them didn’t show any feelings when they were given their punishment.

In the UK, you can give away one of your kidneys to help someone else, but you cannot receive money or things in return.

This was the first time that people were being accused of taking organs illegally under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act of 2015.

The highest punishment allowed by the law is to be in jail for the rest of your life.

A policeman named Esther Richardson said it was important that someone was found guilty of a crime related to forced labor and thanked the person who reported it for being brave.

A young person from Lagos went to court to tell how the Ekweremadus brought him to the United Kingdom to take his kidney.

The kidney was supposed to go to Sonia who needs dialysis because of her kidney problems. She would pay up to £7,000 ($8,800) for the kidney.

The man said a doctor who worked for a politician had hired him, and he had believed he was coming to work in the UK.

Last year, he found out that he needed a kidney transplant when he was brought to London’s Royal Free Hospital.

He ran away and spent three nights sleeping outside after the doctors told him he couldn’t give a body part.

Last May, he went to a police station and said he needed help to stay alive.

The lawyers of the four people accused said that they believed their client was trying to do good, but Ike Ekweremadu was worried that he might be tricked.

Ekweremadu works for the Peoples Democratic Party and has been helping the people of Enugu West in Nigeria since 2003.

This week, important people in Nigeria’s government asked a court in London to be kind to Ekweremadu. They said he has never done anything wrong before and has helped make politics in West Africa better.

He couldn’t run in the latest election because he was in jail during the legal process.

The judge agreed with the people who wanted him to go to jail that he might try to escape the country. His wife and daughter were allowed to be out of jail on certain conditions.

Around 20 people a day in Britain find out their kidneys have stopped working properly and they need to have dialysis for a long time. There are about 7,000 people who need a new kidney from someone who is a good match.

Fiona Loud from the charity Kidney Care UK said that informed consent is very important in organ donation. They make sure that nobody is forced to donate their organs.

People who give their blood willingly are very generous, she said.
